Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez is considering resigning, after a court announced that his wife Begoña Gómez is being investigated for suspected corruption.
“I need to stop and think” to decide “if I should continue leading the government or if I should renounce this honor,” Sánchez writes in a letter published on X.
Sánchez, who represents the Socialists (PSOE), adds that he will announce his decision on Monday and that until then he has suspended his commitments.
Before the court announced that the investigation was ongoing, media reports that Gómez’s connections to several private companies that received state funds or received public contracts were being investigated.
The case was opened on April 16 following a complaint by Manos Limpias, an anti-corruption group whose leader is linked to the extreme right, the court said.
Pedro Sánchez has been the Prime Minister of Spain since 2018.
