Customers rage after Vinted’s price increase | Sweden

--

“I started with Vinted last fall and then they had free shipping, probably to attract more customers,” says seller and buyer Lisa Barbic.

Zero kroner.

That’s how cheap the shipping was for the sellers who uploaded goods to the app during the fall. But during the spring, several users have noted that the price has been raised in two steps.

It was first raised in February to SEK 16. And on April 1 this year, it was raised once more – without any warning.

Now it says “from SEK 29” on all goods sold in Sweden.

The price increase has caused many users to react. Vinted forums on Facebook are filled with disgruntled customers criticizing the double shipping price.

– Many of us joked that we can always hope it’s an April Fool’s joke, but on April 2 it was still SEK 29, says Lisa Barbic, who herself uses the app often.

“As expensive as buying new”

She has bought and sold goods on the app herself since last autumn. Mainly children’s clothes.

– It’s very sad. You find a lot of nice things, but at the same time you don’t want to buy a garment for 13 kroner, 10 kroner buyer protection and then 29 kroner shipping. It will still be almost as much as a new bodysuit costs, says Lisa.

Since the increase, she feels that sales are slow. She sells – and buys – fewer things.

– That’s what’s boring, it will be as expensive as if I were to buy something new, only that I buy it used, says Lisa.

She reacted to the fact that Vinted did not inform about the price increase.

– They have informed about other things in the app that change, but not this, she says.

Vinted: The increases are made with “careful analysis”

The press department at Vinted does not want to do a phone interview about why they raised the prices, but sends a comment via email:

“In line with various operational considerations, we have decided to adjust our shipping prices. These adjustments are always made with careful analysis to ensure prices remain competitive and fair to our members to maintain the affordability the community has come to expect when buying used”, they write.

They write that the shipping cost depends on the size of the package and where it is to be sent.

Launched in Sweden two years ago

The app launched in Sweden in October 2022 and has since grown explosively. During the autumn, it was also launched in the neighboring countries of Denmark and Finland.

“Our trip in the Nordics has so far exceeded our expectations”, writes Vinted CEO Adam Jay in a statement.

The buying and selling platform was founded in Lithuania in 2008. Last fall, the app had 75 million users in 17 different markets, writes Breakit. In 2023, Vinted sold goods for 39 million euros, corresponding to approximately 455 million Swedish kronor.
