Social sustainability and the consumer perspective

Martin started Sustainabil in 2018 and his company is one of the few workshops in Sweden that converts petrol cars to biogas operation.

– It feels great that the role of biogas in the transport sector is highlighted, this is proof that all renewable fuels have a place in the future, says Martin after being awarded this year’s environmental award. Martin also adds that the importance of social sustainability and consumer perspective has been his driving force for many years.

– Social sustainability in the transition is super important. Being able to keep an existing vehicle fleet running with vehicles that the average person can afford to buy and drive is crucial for us to be able to, and in time, reach our climate goals. There must also be more workshops in the country that can repair older fossil-free vehicles at reasonable prices, concludes Martin. But adds “if you want to get something done, you sometimes have to do it yourself”.

Many of the customers who visit Martin’s workshop spend the night and visit sights in Ockelbo while waiting for their car to be ready.

The motivation for this year’s environmental prize winner reads: “Through his great environmental commitment and technical expertise, the winner of the 2022 Environmental Prize gives more opportunities to drive fossil-free. By converting traditional cars to biogas operation, the winner contributes to the county’s environmental goals, creates local jobs and offers people to choose a sustainable alternative at a lower cost”.

The environmental prize is awarded annually to a person, company and organization that, through their activities, has contributed to good and valuable efforts in the environmental field. It is Region Gävleborg’s sustainability committee that appoints the winning contribution. The winner of the prize receives a diploma and 10,000 kroner.
