The Volvo XC40 and C40 Recharge will be rear-wheel drive and have a longer range

Volvo is making a major update of the electric cars XC40 and C40. They get rear-wheel drive and a bigger battery.

Volvo’s electric car siblings XC40/C40 have been listed as “sold out” on the Swedish site during November. But in the Netherlands, among other places, facelifted versions are already available to order.

Volvo has already told that the large SUV EX90 will come with rear-wheel drive, but Volvo is already making a big change to the smaller Recharge models XC40 and C40.

The two models have been discontinued for some time. Now the reason emerges, writes Dutch Autoweek. Volvo has completely redesigned the models and in some markets, including the Netherlands, it is already possible to order them.

Front-wheel drive has been replaced by rear-wheel drive. According to Autoweek, the new electric motor used on the rear axle was developed by Volvo themselves. The models also come with Twin Engine four-wheel drive with 408 horsepower.

The battery grows from 78 to 82 kWh. This gives a range of 534 km for the C40 and 515 km for the XC40. There is also a smaller battery that gives 477 and 460 km WLTP range respectively.

The new motor lowers electricity consumption from 18.2 to 17.1 kWh/100 km for the XC40 and 16.5 kWh/100 km for the C40 according to WLTP. The cars can be fast-charged with an output of up to 200 kW.

With the larger battery, the output is 252 horsepower, and with the smaller one, the output is limited to 239 horsepower. Both versions do 0-100 km/h in 7.4 seconds.

The Swedish prices are not yet official, but in the Netherlands the price of the base model has been raised by around SEK 35,000.
