According to the jury, the Maritime Museum Akvariet, whose exhibitions revolve around the sea, fishing and shipping, has undergone a transformation process that has resulted in a “multifaceted visitor experience”.
“The Maritime Museum Akvariet functions today as an arena for knowledge, commitment and action that inspires visitors to take an active part in preserving our history, our oceans and our planet,” the justification states.
This year’s award was the 28th in the series and the Maritime Museum Akvariet had competition from the Bildmuseet in Umeå and the Eskilstuna City Museum, which were also nominated. Last year, the award went to Östergötland’s museum.
The museum of the year award goes to one that has “demonstrated innovative thinking and community-rooted operations of the highest quality”, and behind it are Sweden’s Museums and the Swedish part of UNESCO’s Icom.
