Missing Klimt portrait sold for 349 million – Sydsvenskan

The artist Gustav Klimt’s “Portrait of Miss Lieser” has been sold at an auction in Vienna for 30 million euros, equivalent to roughly 349 million kroner.

The Austrian artist began the painting in 1917, the year before his death, but never finished it. It was found in Klimt’s studio after he died of a stroke in 1918 and was one of his last works.

The painting, which has some small parts left unfinished, was missing for about a century before it turned up at the auction house in the Austrian capital earlier this year.

The asking price for “Portrait of Miss Lieser” was set at 30-50 million euros. Wednesday’s bidding started at 28 million and landed at 30 million.
