Sara Mitchell-Malm becomes the new chief editor at Expressen | Sweden

--

The coverage of the royal house has often been a large part of Expressen. The front page from the wedding between King Carl Gustaf and Queen Silvia on June 20, 1976 – with the classic “KISS” – sold the most copies in Swedish history. It was also the Express that could reveal the budding love between Crown Princess Victoria and her personal trainer; Daniel Westling from Ockelbo.

In the middle; Expressen’s classic “KISS”, captured by photographer Jonny Graan, at the king and queen’s wedding. On the left, King Charles’s wedding with Princess Diana and on the right the Crown Princess couple Victoria and Daniel.

In recent years, we have seen splits in several large royal houses, the coverage has been characterized by, among other things, Harry and William’s disagreement, Ari Behn’s suicide, Märta Louise’s new love for the shaman Durek Verrett and Silvia’s nephew’s sex purchase. In addition, some royals have lost their titles – and last year the discussion about Sweden’s succession to the throne started again when the king said in the documentary “Sveriges last kungar” that it was “strange” that Carl Philip, who was born as crown prince, was not allowed to keep the first place in the line of succession.

At the same time, the royals can be a rallying point in a dark contemporary age. The Crown Princess’s traditional birthday celebrations at Solliden Castle, state visits and Nobel celebrations spread joy, glitter and glamour.

Recently, we got to see Princess Estelle in a green gala dress from the H&M Conscious Collection – which mother Victoria previously wore on several occasions.

Now Expressen is betting on a modern and strong royal guard at the forefront. Sara Mitchell-Malm, 33, will be Expressen’s new editor-in-chief with the task of reporting and commenting on news.

– It is an incredibly exciting time to work with royal journalism. We now get to follow a new generation of young women who are being trained to take over the throne of several of Europe’s monarchs in the future, including our own, says Sara Mitchell-Malm.

– Part of the coverage is about travel, dresses and state visits – but it’s just as much about giving the Swedes insight into how the royal family uses their tax money and influence, says deputy breaking manager Anna Lindwall.

Sara Mitchell-Malm studied journalism in England and has a multi-year background at the British tabloid Daily Mail. She has since worked as news manager, night manager and reporter at Expressen. In the past year, she has been a guest on TV sofas in major productions and chronicled in Expressen about royals.

– Sara is a good mix between drive and knowledge – and will offer readers everything from entertainment and fast reporting to reviews, says Anna Lindwall.
