Arrest places in southern Sweden are to be released before the Eurovision Song Contest in Malmö. This is so that the police can handle situations where a large number of people are arrested or taken into custody, reports Göteborgs-Posten.
Due to the lack of space in Swedish prisons, detained people are also accommodated in detention facilities, but during Eurovision week the police do not believe they can have detainees in their premises.
Around 30 people will therefore be moved to West Sweden, which will lead to double occupancy of the detention centers there.
– Basically, we have a desire and a need to never have detainees in custody, it is a legislative issue that we must try to deal with as quickly as possible. But during Eurovision, we have to create space in the south, says Joakim Righammar, chief of staff at the Correctional Service to the newspaper.
