Before Monday’s vote in NATO’s military committee, there were three candidates, the Swedish one was voted forward. The Military Committee is NATO’s highest military body and its duties include advising the North Atlantic Council on military matters.

– It really feels fun. I have held various positions in Brussels for ten years before my current position and it will be really fun to return to Brussels, says Torbjörn Sahlén.

Important for Sweden and the Swedish Armed Forces

The brigadier general takes up the post of Deputy Director Operations and Planning (O&P) Division at the International Military Staff within NATO Headquarters. The service starts in January 2025.

– It is important for the membership that we enter NATO’s structures and important for spreading knowledge, says Torbjörn Sahlén.

Good news for the Defense Staff

The message from the vote was welcome.

– I can’t think of a better representative for Sweden and the Armed Forces, it will also be really good for the alliance. Torbjörn will remain at the strategy unit until he takes up the new position, says Major General Johan Pekkari, head of the strategy unit.
