With only a week left until Valborg, the festival looks like it will be able to offer mild weather.

But before that, a new cold front moves in over the country.

– It will be a blissful mixture of snow, rain and freezing rain, says meteorologist Lasse Rydqvist.

Spring has been delayed with unusually cold temperatures across the country. And there is still reason to keep the winter jacket on. Towards the weekend, the 5b low pressure moves in over parts of the country, which means another cold snap.

– The 5b low pressure is the forecast meteorologist’s worst enemy, because there are several things that are uncertain in the timetable. But right now it looks like it could be a rather noisy day in northern Sweden on Friday. Because then you get a blissful mixture of snow, rain and freezing rain, says meteorologist Lasse Rydqvist.

The weather models have difficulty capturing 5b low pressure as they are not in the most common westerly wind flow. It is also due to Sweden’s long and narrow geography, which makes it difficult to predict where the low pressure will hit.

– The nightmare for us who make the forecasts is that it becomes so uncertain when the low pressure comes from the south. Because then you might say that “there will be no rain in Gothenburg”. But then it rains all day because it simply took a westerly course. So that’s a bit boring and ungrateful for us meteorologists. That things can go either way with a low pressure like this.

“Ice winds blow”

But some predictions can still be made. According to the current forecast, there will be rain mixed with snow in the Baltic Sea landscape on Thursday, which will then spread westwards, mainly over Svealand and Norrland on Friday. It turns into snowfall when it comes up towards the northern parts of the landscape on the night of Friday. On Friday, the temperature rises and the weather offers wet snow and rain mixed with snow on the coast of Norrland and in Svealand.

– There must be seven setbacks before it can be spring, as they usually say in farming practice. And in some places in southern Sweden, I think you’re starting to get up to about seven now, says Lasse Rydqvist.

But there is a lightening. Namely, the 5b low pressure is rapidly passing and already towards the beginning of next week the temperature will rise.

– Then it looks like we are at normal temperatures for the season. In May in southern Sweden it is usually around 16–17 degrees at least. Now there are icy winds blowing and it won’t do it the same way then. But then we get new heat from Southern Europe that pulls up. Then we are in a different air mass as well. And it helps the perceived temperature quite a bit.

– Right now the forecast looks good. It really is the case that this warmth and sun comes very timely for those who are going to celebrate Valborg, adds Lasse Rydqvist.
