Amnesty urges in its report that Sweden should strengthen the protection of Sami rights, including through new legislation that guarantees Sami rights to their traditional lands.

Reindeer owner Elle Eriksson believes that this could put pressure on Sweden to comply with its commitments.

– I think it is a good proposal, because as you can see, there are both national and international commitments that Sweden has undertaken to follow but which are not being followed.

“Traditional knowledge is our base”

Amnesty also urges Sweden to make use of the Sami’s traditional knowledge in connection with the so-called green transition.

– It is our base for everything we do, regardless of whether it is reindeer husbandry or not. So it’s great that you want to take advantage of and strengthen the place that traditional knowledge has in processes like this, concludes Elle Eriksson.
