According to the Inspectorate for Care and Care (Ivo), several mistakes were made from the time the man fell ill.

The man’s wife called called for an ambulance when he felt sick, vomited, and had abdominal pain under the ribs and numbness in both arms.

According to Ivo, the ambulance nurse on site should have taken the EKG on the man, given his risk factors for heart disease. Furthermore, it was wrong to direct him to go to the hospital himself without medical contact.

As he was not allowed to go in an ambulance, his wife had to drive him to the emergency room by car.

Could have been treated

At the emergency room, a X-ray was taken of the abdomen, which showed nothing abnormal. Ivo believes that further investigations (ECG) should then have been carried out to find the cause of the problems.

“The autopsy showed that the man had had a heart attack a few days earlier. Normally, there would have been great opportunities for treatment if it had been detected by EKG in time,” writes Ivo in his criticism.

The man died four days later at home as a result of an untreated heart attack.
