Response to “Grieving Soldier”, NWT April 17

The economic situation in Region Värmland is extremely serious. Today’s situation with an economic deficit of almost SEK 1 billion means that we have to investigate and implement all possible savings, large and small. Our focus is to make as many measures as possible that do not affect the work close to the patient. The main mission is to deliver care to the residents of Värmland.

Today, there are two preparation kitchens for meal operations at the Central Hospital in Karlstad, the Guldkornet Patienthotellet restaurant and the regional service kitchen unit. Having two kitchens in the same hospital means duplication of work, something we must reduce in order to become robust and sustainable in the long term. Duplicate work contributes to excessive costs overall. By merging the two kitchens so that all meals are prepared at the main kitchen unit, we achieve synergy effects which in turn generate cost savings.

The economic situation means that we have to change, sometimes in ways that not everyone agrees with the management. The patient hotel with restaurant Guldkornet is a valued and important business that we cherish. Many patients can testify to good treatment and a high level of service that we should all be proud of.
