DIt’s hard to believe today, but there was a time when an environmentalist mouthpiece was referred to as future prime minister. Maria Wetterstrand had record numbers in public opinion and the celebrities flocked around the party.

Then, about fifteen years ago, reporters walked around Södermalm among organic shops and fun-dressed hipsters and tried to portray the green wave that was visible in the world’s big cities. They wrote long reports with headlines like “Modernized party with latte flavor” and quoted voters who said:

– If someone like me is moderately interested in politics, the Green Party is the safest choice. It’s a cowardly way to vote, but an easy way to a softened conscience. The Green Party – can that name stand for anything but good?

In the elections to the European Parliament in 2009, the party became bigger than the Social Democrats in Stockholm.

The following year, the Green Party became the Riksdag’s third largest party and wave master. They entered into a migration agreement with Fredrik Reinfeldt’s government, and the Moderates’ strategist Per Schlingmann dreamed of luring them and their urban voters over to the right-wing bloc.

In 2014, Gustav Fridolin celebrated with a well-attended fountain bath at Mariatorget when they became the second largest party in the European Parliament.

Success seemed unstoppable.

It wasn’t.

Sweden’s most disliked party
