Torch procession, spring song, spun sugar and lottery. In Hedvigslund Park, Älta scout corps has organized Walborg bonfires since 1968.
The tradition lives on even though Sweden has banned the burning of garden waste since January 1 after interpreting the EU’s waste directive. Nacka municipality gives exemption to Älta scout corps and several other organizers who have applied.
Älta scout corps counts on upwards of 4,000 participants.

– We are grateful that we have received permission. We have been doing this for many years and would like to continue the tradition. We have been working on it for three months and it is the corps’ biggest income, says Marie Zackrisson, treasurer of Älta scout corps.
“It’s a little performance when we march in with torches and light the fire,” says Fredrik Sörén, head firefighter at Storängen’s volunteer fire brigade.

Nacka municipality also organizes the traditional Walborg bonfire in Nyckelviken, which attracts thousands of participants. In Duvnäs, Saltsjö-Duvnäs Property Owners’ Association organizes a celebration at the sailing club Måsungen, and in Storängen, Storängen’s owner’s association organizes the event.
– We have older fire trucks and it’s a little show when we pull in with torches and light the fire. Then we stand guarding it all night, says Fredrik Sörén, senior fire marshal for Storängen’s volunteer fire brigade.
Storängen’s owner-occupied home association organizes Walpurgis celebrations this year as well. Storängen’s volunteer fire brigade and chief fire marshal Fredrik Sörén help light and keep track of the fire.

Dove nose
When: 20:00-22:00
It’s happening: Saltsjö-Duvnäs Property Owners’ Association organizes a celebration at the sailing club Måsungen. Choral singing in honor of spring at 8 p.m. and then the Walborg bonfire is lit. Boo FF’s girls sell coffee and sausages.
Key Bay
When: 6-10 p.m.
It’s happening: Choir sings into spring at 8.15pm and the fire is lit at 8.30pm. The service in the mansion is open from 18-22.
Storengen
When: at 8 p.m.
It’s happening: Storängens Egnahemsförening organizes a celebration at the intersection Ängsvägen/Storängsvägen. The bonfire is lit at 8:00 p.m.
Knead
When: at 6.30pm-10pm.
It’s happening: Älta Scoutkår invites you to Walborg celebrations in Hedvigslund park with lotteries and fish pond. The torch train departs from Ältakrysset at 19:00 and the fire is lit at 19:30.

Dispensation for Walborg fire
Walborg fires in Nacka require you to apply for a dispensation from the municipality.
Email [email protected] your personal information, where the celebration is being arranged, planned start and end time and what security measures are being taken.
Only twigs, branches and woody natural material are allowed to burn.
Public Walborg bonfires also require permission from the police.
