(To the extent that the teacher has permission to care, or at least to do something?)
A group of young people get on the bus, only one of whom pays a ticket! They sit with their shoes on the bus seats. Nobody seems to care. (Perhaps you shouldn’t get involved!? Or are you afraid of getting shot?)
Scientific studies show how social media contributes to mental illness among young people. Bullying, exclusion, isolation, gender dysphoria, house sitters, self-injurious behaviour. But most people don’t seem to care.
“Assignment review” shows how young people are drawn into criminal activity, first with minor assignments and later to carry out murder. The principals lack feelings. They don’t care. Some parents care, some would like to care, but don’t dare.
Some sell drugs. For “ordinary people” who buy to have a moment’s extra fun. That’s how crime is maintained. But “ordinary people”, who buy the drug, don’t bother to think about the consequences.
Old people get called. They are tricked into thinking that they have been the victims of an attempted fraud and now finally get help from some very friendly, helpful person. There is a rush to save what can be saved, the old are forced to hand over their account details, to move their assets to a “safe place”. The banks do not stop the transactions. The scammers don’t care.
In the West Bank, another 14 people are killed in an Israeli raid. At least 507 Palestinians were killed in the West Bank (!) in 2023, of which at least 81 were children. In Sweden, we don’t care.
A single torn bloody, dead child evokes emotion. It could have been my child! But in Gaza, thousands and thousands of children are being torn apart, killed. Very few care.
Civilian Gazans are hungry, fighting for food, but Sweden suspended its aid to UNWRA because Israel spread a rumor that 12 individuals, out of tens of thousands of employees, had been somehow involved in the Hamas attack on October 7. Very few cared. Still Israel has not presented any evidence. The war in Gaza is a genocide according to the UN, but in Sweden we don’t care.
There are many more situations where few seem to care. Most people seem to care primarily about themselves. To the extent that you also care about others, you are not allowed, or dare not.
It’s time we do something, all of us, that we dare, that we speak up, that we take responsibility, that we care!
