In the 50s, dance floors popped up everywhere in the country. This led to a heated social debate.
The consequence was that bar, nightclub and restaurant owners from 1956 needed a special permit from the Police Authority in order for people to be allowed to dance on their premises.
On Thursday, the government decided on a legal council referral that means an abolished permit requirement for public dance events.
“This is a long-awaited freedom reform. It is not reasonable for the state to regulate people’s dancing. By removing the requirement for a dance permit, we also reduce bureaucracy and costs for entrepreneurs and others who organize dances,” says Minister of Justice Gunnar Strömmer (M) in a press release from the Ministry of Justice and the Ministry of Climate and Business.
Although dance events in non-public places no longer have to be approved by the Police Authority in order to be organized, such dance events must as a general rule be reported to the Police Authority, the government points out.
There is very broad support in the Riksdag for removing the requirement for a dance permit.
The changes to the law are proposed to enter into force on 1 July 2023.
