“We don’t want to jinx – but IF there would be a profit for Sweden, work starts pretty much immediately. After all, SVT and Sweden have hosted the event before and we have some routine. It is a huge production apparatus and the first thing we do is add a production management team that works hand in hand with the EBU,” writes Ebba Adielsson, program manager for Eurovision on SVT in an email.

The odds speak for themselves ahead of Saturday’s final: Eurovision will be held in Sweden next year.

The only question is – if Loreen now wins – in which city will Eurovision 2024 be held?

Historically, the organizers have never ended up outside Sweden’s three largest cities. So far, Stockholm has had the opportunity the most times, in 1975, 2000 and 2016, while Malmö and Gothenburg have arranged twice (1992, 2013) and once (1985) respectively.

The doubt in the south

Is it time for Gothenburg?

Maybe, at least if you ask the authorities in the municipality.

– Gothenburg in general has a fantastic ability to organize large competitions. We have a good hotel, it is very centrally located in our city which has a good range of entertainment, says Jonas Attenius (S), chairman of the municipal board in Gothenburg.

He continues:

– But I have to be honest to say that you have to weigh hosting against the costs. And we are in an extremely difficult time financially. Should we end up in that situation, those aspects must also be taken into account.

The chairman of the municipal board in Malmö, Katrin Stjernfeldt Jammeh (S), reasons similarly.

– We are open to organizing large, international events in Malmö and over the years have hosted a number of highly regarded concerts, competitions and conferences. When we organized the Eurovision Song Contest in 2013 it was a success, but we also know that large events require a lot of resources and in a strained financial situation it is of course not possible to carry it out at any price.

Eurovision win brings 310 million visitors to Sweden

The city of Stockholm is said to have spent around 100 million kroner on equipping infrastructure and other things for the last time Eurovision was organized in Sweden. Back then, in 2016, the economic situation looked different. Today, many municipalities in Sweden suffer from financial deficits.

It is not known exactly how much Eurovision would cost any of the municipalities. But it is clear that the Stockholm Chamber of Commerce sees that a new Eurovision event in Stockholm would give a real bang for the buck.

Eurovision win brings 310 million visitors to Sweden“writes the Stockholm Chamber of Commerce in a press release.

– It is something that Sweden and Stockholm need in these times we find ourselves in, says Andreas Hatzigeorgiou, CEO of the Stockholm Chamber of Commerce.

Stockholm city councilor Karin Wanngård (S) is cautiously positive that the capital should once again be the organizer in the event of a possible Eurovision win, but with certain reservations.

– It is not possible to hide the fact that it meant a great effort for the city’s employees. Whether we would like to be the host city again is too early to answer at the moment, says Karin Wanngård (S).

Business is positive about arrangements

How much money a possible Eurovision arrangement would bring in to Gothenburg, Malmö or any other city other than Stockholm has not been calculated. But both South Sweden’s and West Sweden’s chambers of commerce welcome an organiser.

– It’s a big event and costs a lot, but it’s always positive from a marketing perspective and of course when we get guests to the city who both live and consume here, says Maria Fuxborg, head of economic policy at the West Swedish Chamber of Commerce.

– It is an arrangement that would put Malmö on the map and, as I said, we have the facilities. We have had it before and it worked well, it would be a really brilliant idea if we got this to Malmö, says Stephan Müchler, CEO of the Chamber of Commerce in the interests of southern Swedish companies.
