Swedish Daniel Nyström, 36, has fought voluntarily for Ukraine for over a year.
Now he has been found dead in Kiev.
– It was difficult to take in, it is still so incredibly, incredibly boring. Unbelievable, says his mother Nell Nyström to the newspaper NSD.
In April 2022, Daniel Nyström, 36, chose to go to the war in Ukraine. He was one of the Swedish soldiers who went down and fought for the International Legion and the Ukrainian army.
During the year, he has had regular contact with his family in Sweden. Including mother Nell Nyström at home in Kiruna. She says that he had plans to go home to Sweden soon.
– He hadn’t been home for over a year. He could not just go because he was no longer a volunteer but had signed a contract. He was looking forward to a little break, she tells NSD.
On Wednesday, however, came the tragic news. The police knocked on Nell’s home and told her that Daniel had been found dead in his bed in an apartment in Kiev. The exact cause of death is unknown.
Participated in several fierce battles
When Kherson was liberated from Russia, he was there. He also took part in the tough battles on the eastern front in Donetsk.
Now his colleagues, friends and family remember him. Many who fought with Daniel Nyström in Ukraine have written posts on social media.
“He will be greatly honoured, he probably likes that,” writes Nell Nyström in a message to Aftonbladet.
His family is now in constant contact with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to find out what will happen next.
