Since the war started, several hundred Swedish soldiers have participated in the battles against the Russian invasion forces in Ukraine. One of the most profiled was Daniel Nyström, 36, who has shared his experiences on Instagram.
On Wednesday evening, his mother Nell Nyström received the unimaginable message from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs that her son had been found dead, something the Foreign Ministry has also confirmed to GP.
– It was difficult to take in, it is still so incredibly, incredibly boring. Unbelievable, she tells NSD.
Daniel Nyström is said to have been found in his bed in an apartment in Kiev. The cause of death is currently unknown.
“He was looking forward to a little break”
He joined the war in April 2022 and was, among other things, present when Kherson was liberated as well as in the fierce battles near Donetsk on the eastern front. He previously fought for the International Legion and the Ukrainian Army. Shortly he would travel home to Sweden to arrange a passport.
– He hadn’t been home for over a year. He could not just go because he was no longer a volunteer but had signed a contract. He was looking forward to a little break, says Nell Nyström to NSD.
Daniel Nyström is now being celebrated on the Instagram account svenskkrigare_ukraina. It says that they were seen not so long ago drinking coffee and joking in a bar in Zaporizhzhia.
“Afterwards he drove me to the hotel. What I didn’t know was that it was the last time we would see each other. You are gone now. It’s really heavy… You will always be in our memory. Rest in peace comrade, brother, hero.”
In just under an hour, the post has received over 1,000 likes and many comments. Among other things, it says “Basker av”, “Rest in peace” and “Hjälte”.
The GP has been in contact with the mother, who approves the publication of the name and picture.
