Armed officers arrested a man at the scene on suspicion of criminal damage and dangerous driving.
There are no reports of any injuries.
Enquiries are ongoing.
Images show a car with its tailgate open which has crashed into Downing Street’s security gates. The collision does not appear to have occurred at high speed, according to BBC footage from the scene.
It is still unclear whether the driver deliberately drove into the gate or whether it was an accident.
The cordons at the site have been lifted.
