Wada will also send an investigation team to China to review China’s anti-doping program led by Chinada.
Following the media revelation that 23 Chinese swimmers were never suspended under investigation and were then able to compete in the 2021 Olympics, Wada has come under sharp criticism. This after neither questioning Chinada’s mishandling nor making the case public.
That Wada now adds an independent investigation, as the critics demanded, does not mean that the anti-doping organization admits to wrongdoing. On the contrary.
“Wada’s integrity and reputation are under attack. In recent days, Wada has been unfairly accused of serious bias against China by not sending the case to Cas (the Court of Arbitration for Sport). We continue to deny the false accusations,” says chairman Witold Banka.
Swiss prosecutor Eric Cottier will conduct the investigation.
The Chinese swimmers were freed from doping when the Chinese investigation showed that they had ingested the heart medication trimetazidine through contaminated food.
