Shortly before 09:00 on Tuesday morning, police were called to Majorna in Gothenburg after a woman in her 30s was shot on a tram.
A man who was on the tram is said to have fired the shot and then left the scene. A large police operation is currently underway.
The woman awake and talkative
The woman was hit in the abdomen and has been taken to hospital.
– The woman was awake and talkative. The ambulance’s first assessment is that the situation is stable, says Peter Adlersson, press spokesperson for the police in the West region.
It is unclear if more passengers were on the tram.
The tram has been impounded for a technical examination and a preliminary investigation into attempted murder has been launched.
– We have a good description of the man, there are surveillance images, says Peter Adlersson.
Man arrested
Shortly before 11 o’clock, a man in his 60s was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and aggravated weapons offences. According to the police, he was able to be arrested thanks to signal information and surveillance footage.
It is not clear if the shooter intended to hit the woman. The woman did not recognize him from before, according to TT.
– He has pointed the weapon in that direction in any case. But there is a great deal that is unclear, says Adlersson to TT.
Interrupted scheduled services
Västtrafik has rerouted tram lines 3 and 9 in both directions and replacement buses operate the route. It should not lead to any delays or longer journey times at the moment, according to Västtrafik’s emergency hotline.
– We do not currently have a forecast for when traffic can resume as usual, says Henrik Kjellberg, press communicator at Västtrafik.
According to Kjellberg, no driver or other staff should be injured.
Barbro Svensson, a resident of the area, came to the scene shortly after the incident.
– I saw ambulances at full speed. Now that I know what happened, it feels unfunny. You don’t think something like this should happen in this area, she says.
