Policeman indicted for deadly intervention – sentenced for causing the death of another

--

It was in November last year that the accused police, together with a colleague, would handcuff a drug-affected man in his 50s on Lidingö. According to the indictment, the accused police officer had pressed the man against a landing with so much weight that the arrested person died.

A camera from a garbage truck filmed the entire intervention and it has been decisive in the fact that there was a prosecution. The film also became an important part of the district court’s verdict.

The court writes that the film reproduces large parts of the course of events and that, together with the autopsy doctor’s information, means that it is proven that the arrested man died as a result of suffocation with subsequent cardiac arrest.

The policeman – who had only been working as a policeman for six months at the time of the intervention – has always denied any crime, but the Stockholm district court believes that the policeman’s negligence during the intervention led to the man’s death. The police are sentenced to a suspended sentence and daily fines.

The police personnel responsibility board has already decided that the policeman will be allowed to keep his job regardless of what the verdict is. All members were unanimous in the decision.
