Luka Modric, a regular at Real Madrid, plays on Tuesday in the semi-finals with Croatia against Argentina in the World Cup. Four years ago he led his national team to silver in Russia, and this year there may be a chance for revenge on Sunday, when this year’s final is played in Qatar.

After the World Cup in Russia, Modric was named the world’s best player, when he was awarded the Ballon d’Or, and afterwards he celebrated by buying luxury watches for teammates and managers.

Now the Danish brand expert Simon Bastiansen, who at the time was given responsibility for Modric’s commercial partnership, talks about the Croatian’s gesture.

– Modric bought 25 Daytona Rolex watches in red gold for the entire Real Madrid team, but it wasn’t just for the players. It was also to the bus driver, the doctor, the physiotherapist and the assistant coach, says Bastiansen to Danish TV2 and continues:

– He did the same thing with the Croatian national team, so he bought 50 watches in total.

According to Danish TV2, Modric bought watches for around SEK 22 million.

– Without them I would never have become the world’s best soccer player, Modric explained the decision to give watches to teammates according to Bastiansen.
