The Champions League meeting between Bayern Munich and Manchester United will have a Swedish referee.

Glenn Nyberg, 34, is appointed head judge.

– It’s huge, says elite referee coach Martin Ingvarsson to SVT.

Nyberg has refereed hundreds of matches in the Allsvenskan and in recent years he has been given the chance in international tournaments and has done well.

At the beginning of June, he had to referee the U20 World Cup final between Uruguay and Italy and a few weeks later he had the upset meeting in the Nations League between the Netherlands and Italy.

Now it is therefore a heavyweight meeting in the Champions League that awaits.

“Huge year”

He, Mahbod Beigi and Andreas Söderkvist will referee the match between Bayern Munich and Manchester United on Wednesday.

– Glenn has a very high potential, it has been a huge year for him. Now it’s just a matter of continuing to show why the team should have these matches. But Glenn is so serious that he takes it one game at a time. It will be exciting to see how they tackle the task, says elite referee coach Martin Ingvarsson.

“Feather in the hat”

The more big matches you get to referee, the higher status you get internationally, provided you don’t lose yourself.

– All matches are equally important, but now it’s a well-known team, so it’s a feather in the cap of course, a sign that he did something good, says Ingvarsson.

Swedish referees are not allowed to do interviews in connection with international matches.
