Hirscher was the great dominant in the Alpine World Cup for several seasons and is considered one of the best alpine skiers of all time.

But when he now makes a comeback, it won’t be for Austria. Instead, the 35-year-old will compete for the Netherlands, his mother’s home country, after the Austrian Ski Federation approved Hirscher’s request to switch nations.

– We have of course worked very hard to offer Marcel the best possible and individual conditions for a comeback, says Scherer on the Austrian Ski Association’s website, and continues:

– We of course regret his decision to request a change of nationality to the Dutch Skiing Association, but in the end we supported it.

Hirscher put the skis on the shelf after the 2019 season, and has, among other things, two Olympic golds and seven WC golds in the prize cupboard.

In addition, he won the overall World Cup eight years in a row between 2012 and 2019, and has a total of 67 World Cup victories – among men’s skaters, only Ingemar Stenmark has more, with his 86 victories.
