The Swedish world star proved to be human when he had to struggle to win the gold at the indoor WC in Glasgow at the beginning of March. Once indoors became outdoors, Armand Duplantis was back in superior form.

– It’s always nice to open the outdoor season with a world record, says the 24-year-old.

“Be quite good”

The bar was 6.24 meters when he sailed over during the Diamond League competition in Xiamen, China, last Saturday. After brushing his world record by one centimeter, he was treated to domestic sweets.

– When I broke my record, I had the opportunity to try some sweets afterwards. All candy is green here! I have eaten green chocolate, green ice cream. I tried all the green stuff. It’s super cool to try new things and some of them were pretty good, he says, smiling.

The distance to the nearest competitor – the American Sam Kendricks – was a whopping 42 centimeters.

– People will expect higher heights in the future. That’s okay, I expect that from myself too. I want to break as many world records as I can.

“See more of the nightlife”

The Diamond League circus remains in China and on Saturday there is competition in Suzhou, which is near Shanghai.

– I know I’m in good shape and I knew it before the competition in Xiamen, but you never know how the technology will match the shape you’re in. It definitely did now and I know I can jump really high right now, says Duplantis at a press conference before the gala.

This week, Duplantis has even managed to visit Suzhou as a tourist.

– With a week between competitions, I have had the opportunity to experience more than ever, but more than I usually do in the cities I compete in. Hopefully I can jump high again on Saturday and see more of the nightlife, says Armand Duplantis.
