Luka Modric, 37, has played a key role in Croatia’s run to the semi-finals. A WC gold would crown a career in which he has already won the most. Including La Liga, the Champions League and the Ballon d’Or, the award as the world’s best footballer in 2018.

However, a meeting with the Danish brand expert Simon Bastiansen shows how he has not become egoistic about it.

Bastiansen tells how he met Modric four years ago to get him to enter into sponsored collaborations with, among other things, the watch brand Breitling.

Then Modric told a “crazy story” to the Dane.

After the Ballon d’Or award, Modric bought himself a Rolex watch. And to everyone else.

– He explained that he bought 25 Daytona Rolex watches in red gold for the entire Real Madrid squad. But it wasn’t just for the players. It was for the bus driver, the doctor, the physical therapist, the assistant coach. It was for everyone.

Luka Modric gave away 50 watches

All in all, he spent over SEK 11 million on the 25 watches.

– But then Modric says again that the story is not quite finished. He tells me that he also did the same with the Croatian national team. So he bought 50 watches in total, he tells TV2.

According to Bastiansen, Modric explained:

– Without them, I would never have become the world’s best soccer player.

It remains to be seen if Modric will have reason to share more gifts after the World Cup. His Croatia face Argentina in the first semi-final at 8pm on Tuesday night.
