Alexander Isak, 23, made an immediate impression for his Newcastle.

The striker stepped in – and featured Joelinton in Newcastle’s 1-0 win in the League Cup semi-final.

Alexander Isak started on the bench for Newcastle – who visited Southampton in the first of two meetings in the League Cup semi-finals.

The first half offered no finesse. Newcastle’s Joelinton had a ball in the net – but the goal was ruled out when the Brazilian received the ball with the help of his arm.

Isak was replaced

In the second half, the same Joelinton missed a super position completely free in front of goal. Then coach Eddie Howe chose to act. Callum Wilson made way for Alexander Isak, who needed just over six minutes to make an impression.

The Swede drove forward to the right – and played the ball in for Joelinton – who this time put the ball into the net, 1-0 Newcastle.

Wild joy erupted and Isak jumped over the billboards towards the stands to celebrate the goal together with the visiting Newcastle fans.

– I lost it a little there. But it’s incredible how they make you feel like we’re playing at home. They should have a lot of confidence for today, says the striker to NUFC TV.

Advantage Newcastle

The goal was also the only one of the match. Isak had a chance in the final minutes, but the finish went in the crossbar.

– It was a tough match today, but I think we did well. Only the last little bit was missing in the closing stages. Me and Maxi (Allan Saint-Maximin) wanted to come in with more energy for the team, and we did that well today.

The 1-0 victory means that Newcastle have tightened their grip on the final place at Wembley. The return will be played in one week, on Tuesday, January 31. Then at St. James’ Park.
