Withstands extreme weather

He also sees opportunities to increase preparedness for the extreme weather that is spreading.

“In this way, we can make stormwater plans with greater accuracy and detect risks in the event of, for example, torrential rain,” says Andrée.

In Karlstad, the municipality uses drones to contribute to smarter urban development.

In the first place, it concerns what are called photogrammetric measurement missions, which is a way of measuring three-dimensional positions of objects based on images taken by the drones.

Saves a lot of time

“We can save a lot of time by flying over an area compared to terrestrial measurement from the ground. One of the purposes of data collection via drones is also to produce 3D models that can be used to visualize urban development,” says the measurement engineer Björn Jingfors at Voister.

In the long run, you see lots of areas of use, including food deliveries.

“We have designed an organization that should be able to grow. Currently, the permit does not cover the possibility of making deliveries or flying beyond line of sight, but if missions fall within the scope of the permit, we can carry them out,” says Jingfors.

Testing food deliveries

In Torsby, ten miles north of Karlstad, the municipality in collaboration with Aviant has done a test with drone deliveries of food.

Another test will be done this summer.

“In the long run, if it becomes a permanent service, it will lead to an increased service for those who live in sparsely populated areas,” says the municipality’s project manager Johan Erlandsson to SVT.

Wide use

Södertälje municipality explains on its website that drones are used in a wide range of contexts.

“The purpose of drone flights is, for example, to document property inspections, building permit matters, to inform the public about the municipality’s activities and for the marketing of Södertälje municipality,” they write.

In order for the municipalities to be allowed to use drones in urban areas, a so-called Sora permit, Specific Operation Risk Assessment, is required, among other things.

It is granted by the Swedish Transport Agency.
