Remember when Tim Cook talked about why Mac sales were doing so well during the Macbook Unibody launch event in late 2008?

For those of you who don’t remember, I can tell you that one of the reasons was Vista, which may have been the worst operating system ever. However, Windows ME can compete for the top spot – there are differences of degree even in hell. Or as Tim Cook said: “It is not an exaggeration when I say that Vista most certainly did not live up to user expectations.”

The other day I was once again reminded why I switched to Mac. And it’s not because the hardware is better (it is), that it syncs seamlessly between all my devices (it does), or that Mac OS is that much more elegant than Windows (it is).

No, the reason is spelled integrity. Mac OS doesn’t throw ads in your face about which apps you must have or buy.

Something that Microsoft will now start with. The Start menu on Windows 11 will soon show ads for Microsoft Store apps.

What the hell are they really thinking?

Do they hate their users?

If I were a Windows user, I’d go nuts. Imagine being inundated with ads for apps you don’t even want every time you click on the Start menu. And it doesn’t matter if it’s only Microsoft apps they’re advertising – ads integrated into an operating system are an abomination. Even worse than Microsoft’s Teams. It will probably be possible to disable the feature, but something so stupid should be disabled from the start, then people with masochistic tendencies can enable it if they want.

I know what you’re thinking. “Why don’t you mention the App Store with all its ads?”. My colleague has previously written about it, and I agree that it’s very naughty when fake apps can buy themselves higher positions than the official one.

But it is not the same as placing advertising in Dock, for example.

When I switched to Mac, in 2006, it was with some hesitation. I enjoyed playing computer games and all Mac users are probably painfully aware of the gaming situation on our computers.

But one thing is certain. There aren’t enough games in the world for me to go back to Windows again. Mac OS keeps quiet; no pop-ups that appear when you least expect it, and best of all: no advertising.
