A Swedish volunteer has died in Ukraine, the Swedish Foreign Ministry confirms.
The man is said to have died in a traffic accident.
– The car collided with an armored vehicle in the dark, says the chairman of Swedish Rescuers.
According to the Foreign Ministry, it is a Swedish man in his 20s, native of southern Sweden who died.
The accident is said to have occurred when the man participated in an evacuation of an injured person from the war front during Wednesday.
According to SvD, which was the first to report on the incident, a total of three volunteers and one injured person were traveling in a car that was on its way to the city of Bakhmut in Donetsk in eastern Ukraine.
The injured person in the car is said to have also died in the accident.
Crashed in the dark
The vehicle in which the Swede was traveling was delivered by Swedish Rescuers, an association consisting of paramedics, police officers and firefighters who collect money to send vehicles to Ukraine.
– The information I have received is that the car collided with an armored vehicle in the dark, says Johan Hansson, chairman of the association.
The Swedish man is said to have been in the country as a volunteer soldier and paramedic. He is said to have been part of the organization Hospitallers, which consists of volunteers from different countries who assist the Ukrainian military with medical skills.
Relatives are informed of the death.
Not the first Swede to die in Ukraine
This summer, another Swedish man was killed in fighting in Ukraine, after he was hit by a shell near the front in the Donetsk area.
That man was in his 30s and had previously been employed by the Armed Forces but ended his service in order to go to Ukraine.
