The extreme heat has a firm grip on the Mediterranean and southern Europe, and reports of new high temperature peaks follow each other.

The latest comes from Italy.

On the island of Sardinia, the previous heat record during the month of July has been eclipsed, Norwegian TV2 reports.

At 5pm on Monday, a weather station in Jerzu on the island measured a temperature of 48 degrees – the highest July temperature ever.

Northeast of the resort, in Siniscola, a temperature of 47.3 was measured.

Last week, temperatures reached above the 40 mark in several parts of the country. In the Italian capital Rome, a record high temperature of 41.8 degrees was recorded.

The neighboring island of Sicily currently has Europe’s highest recorded temperature ever – 48.8 degrees. That record was set in August 2021, writes Norwegian TV2.

Warmest June ever

Scientists have previously warned that we could be heading for the hottest July on record.

– “Once upon a time” means late Eem (an interglacial period, editor’s note) around 120,000 years ago, said Dr Karsten Hausstein, who researches atmospheric radiation at Leipzig University, to The Guardian earlier in July.

At the same time, June was the warmest June month ever recorded, according to the EU’s climate agency Copernicus.
