An Arizona grand jury has decided to indict former President Donald Trump’s former chief of staff Mark Meadows and lawyer Rudy Giuliani on suspicion of election fraud. They are charged together with 16 others.
The indictment lists eleven named people and seven unnamed. Two of the latter are, according to American media, Meadows and Giuliani.
The indictment primarily concerns the existence of so-called false electors that would be used to give Trump the victory in Arizona, even though the official result showed that Biden won. In a letter to Congress after the election, eleven of the defendants claimed they were elected and approved electors. Then, on December 14, 2020, they had a meeting where they signed a document claiming that Trump was the rightful victor.
A judge had, just before the meeting, rejected their appeal of the election results in which they demanded that Arizona refrain from sending the results of Biden’s victory to Congress.
Charges have previously been filed in several other states against false electors who claimed that Trump won the election.
