STRASBOURG. The European Parliament has hammered out legislation that will ensure that the bins are not filled with packaging. In 2021, each European left behind 189 kilograms of packaging waste.

The legislative package contains targets on how much packaging waste must be reduced, and rules that all packaging (except for certain materials, such as ceramics, cork and textiles) must be able to be recycled.

From 1 January 2030, certain single-use plastic packaging, for example around unprocessed fresh fruit and vegetables, for food and drinks filled into packaging in cafes and restaurants, as well as small packaging for sauces and flavourings, will be banned. Even very thin plastic bags are prohibited.

Among the Swedish parliamentarians, S, V, MP and L voted for, while SD and C voted no. C justifies his refusal by saying that the rules are too detailed, and they will be difficult to introduce and follow. M and KD put down their votes. The rules must also be formally approved by the Council of Ministers, which has provisionally given the green light.
