Israel’s ongoing response to the terrorist-labeled Hamas attack on October 7 has caused a catastrophic humanitarian situation in Gaza.
Students are trying to pressure the US government to stop the Israeli attacks in Gaza, which have killed more than 34,000 Palestinians, according to the Hamas-controlled Ministry of Health.
The students also demand that the universities cut all financial ties with Israel and with all companies that support Israel’s warfare in Gaza.
It has caused protests among students at several universities, including prestigious Columbia University, Yale and New York University. Many have set up unauthorized tents on campus in connection with the demonstration.
Over 90 people have been arrested at a campus in Los Angeles.
Around 150 people are gathering outside the detention center in Texas after about 30 have been arrested during demonstrations where the police entered with hundreds of men, horses and batons.
Urged the principal to resign
When the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Republican Mike Johnson, visited Columbia University on Wednesday, he called on the university’s hard-pressed chancellor to resign if she cannot end the “chaos.”
– If this is not quickly calmed down and there is a stop to threats and intimidation, then it may be time to call in the National Guard, said Johnson.
A university spokesperson says there are rumors that the university has considered calling in the National Guard.
Universities across the US
The protests began at Columbia University last week and have since spread to other universities across the United States.
In many places, Jewish students have expressed concern about being on campus during the demonstrations because of anti-Semitic elements.
There are no reports of any injuries.
