After intense pleas from Defense Secretary Yoav Gallant, the US leadership has given Israel a chance to take steps to reduce attacks on Palestinians. Among other things, according to Israel’s TV 11, Gallant has promised to move Netzah Yehuda to the Golan Heights, where no Palestinians live.

The news of sanctions against Netzah Yehuda attracted a lot of attention in Israel and was condemned – not only by the government. Opposition leader Yair Lapid called on the US to instead place responsibility for the abuses on the members of the government who defend the acts of violence against Palestinians.

The US is considering still sanctions against several different Israeli security units, probably also against the prison authority, which reports to Police Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir. After the Hamas movement’s attack on Israel last October, Ben-Gvir has ordered dramatic deterioration in the conditions of Palestinian security prisoners.

Around ten Palestinians have died in Israeli prisons in the past six months.
