Donald Trump has already made history after he became the first ex-president ever to be formally charged in a criminal case in April. But a possible verdict, and a prison sentence, could be even more historic.

ABC writes that the Secret Service, the agency responsible for the president’s security, has already started planning for a possible lock-in.

– This is obviously an unexplored area. No prison system, neither federal nor state, has had to deal with this before, Martin Horn, who has been in charge of the prison system in New York and Pennsylvania, told the New York Times.

Can be locked up – with his bodyguard

Former presidents are protected by the Secret Service for the rest of their lives, without exception. That makes a possible prison stay even more precarious.

– In one way or another, the Secret Service must protect him at all times, even if he is in a detention or prison cell, says American lawyer Joseph Cosgrove to Dagbladet.

– If there’s one thing the Secret Service doesn’t tell you, it’s how they protect a president. But they will protect him, somehow.

The longest prison sentence in all trials that Trump could receive is 717 years, according to Dagbladet.

“Protect his food”

The New York Times has spoken to several government officials, who say that a prison sentence for Trump would mean major logistical problems for the Secret Service.

Among other things, they would have to inspect his food, protect his personal belongings and keep him away from other inmates.

“If he were to be incarcerated, a team of agents would be working 24 hours a day, seven days a week, rotating in and out of the facility,” writes the newspaper.

“Although firearms are of course strictly prohibited in the prisons, the agents would still be armed.”
