Iran snorts at UN proposal for investigation

The UN Human Rights Council opened an unusual special meeting on Thursday to discuss the crisis in Iran, which has been rocked for two months by the regime’s violent response to protests after the death of young woman Mahsa Zhina Amini in the custody of the morality police.

The meeting took place on the initiative of Germany and Iceland, but with support from around 50 countries. New UN Commissioner Volker Türk called for an end to the violence, but did not sound optimistic.

– I offered to go to Iran, I also offered a greater presence there – we don’t have an office there – but so far have not received a response.

German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock also blames the Iranian regime for its silence.

– The only reaction we have received is more violence, more death.

The Human Rights Council has long had a “special rapporteur” for Iran, which, however, is opposed by the rulers. Now the proposal is to establish a new fact-finding body to investigate all violations committed since Amini’s death in mid-September.

The question is how big a chance such an instance would have when the Tehran regime is so reluctant. And Iran’s representative does not mince words about Thursday’s meeting.

– The Islamic Republic of Iran strongly regrets that the Human Rights Council is once again being used by arrogant states to hostilely distance themselves from an independent UN member that sticks to its commitment to take care of human rights, says Khadijeh Karimi, high on what is known as Ministry of Women and Family in Tehran.
