Increase the vaccination rate!

That call directs now the government to the country’s regions and municipalities.

– Vaccination coverage is far too low in far too many regions, says Minister of Social Affairs Jakob Forssmed (KD) in a press release.

Not satisfied with the vaccination rate

In the spring of 2024, the Public Health Authority recommends a top-up dose of vaccine against covid-19 to all people aged 80 and over. The recommendation also applies to people who are 65 years of age or older and have daily care efforts.

But, as the pharmaceutical world previously reported, the vaccinations are slow. A week ago, the Public Health Authority pointed out that significantly more people need to receive vaccines to keep immunity up. And now comes a similar statement about the vaccination rate from the government.

Vaccine coverage among those who are recommended the initial dose currently varies widely in the country, the Public Health Agency’s statistics show. Region Stockholm has the lowest coverage for those aged 80 or older with 13.7 percent. Region Västmanland has the highest vaccine coverage in this age group with 65.1 percent.

The national average is barely 40 percent.

The spread of infection right now was low

After a peak in the spread of infection around Christmas, the spread of covid-19 is currently low. But that does not make the care dose any less important, emphasizes the government, which believes that people in risk groups need it “so that the vaccines will provide good protection over time”.

– It is now it is up to the regions and municipalities to quickly increase the pace of vaccination work so that more people in risk groups can receive continued protection during the summer and in connection with a possible early peak of infection this autumn. It is important to work actively with this so that the vaccines reach more people, says Jakob Forssmed.
