“Larry the Barfly” has been around since the very first “Simpsons” episode in 1989. But in the latest, which aired Sunday on American television, Homer and his friends at Moe’s Tavern discover to their horror that Larry is dead, reports The Independent.

Larry was voiced for all years by the actor Harry Shearer, who also voices other characters such as Homer’s boss Mr. Burns and neighbor Ned Flanders.

However, Larry was never a prominent character, his role mostly consisted of sitting and drinking beer with the bartender Moe. He rarely had any lines, and in fact his last name was only revealed in the last episode – after his death.

The fans mourn

Despite Larry’s anonymity, many fans are now mourning the fact that he will no longer be seen in the TV series.

“It’s hard to understand that we will never see Larry again,” writes one user on a fan forum.

“I’m older than 30 and younger than 40… I’ve been watching ‘Simpsons’ all my life and just found out the name of that dude sitting at the bar is Larry,” writes another on X.

“The Simpsons” is now in its 35th season. The episode where Larry died was number 765.
