The summer entertainment Svindersvik in Nacka has been designated a building monument, which means important legal protection for the historical and cultural values of the place.

Svindersvik is a summer pleasure from the 1740s in fully preserved rococo with main building, kitchen wing and pavilion owned and preserved by the Nordic Museum Foundation. According to the Cultural Environment Act, individual buildings or areas with particularly high cultural-historical value can be declared architectural monuments by the County Administrative Board. Following an application from the museum, the decision on building heritage declaration has now gained legal force. The importance of Svindersvik summer fun as part of Nacka’s and Stockholm’s cultural heritage has thus been officially recognized and protected.

– One of the main reasons why we have pursued this protection is the ongoing transformation of the area around Svindersvik. We are happy that it is now ensured that this unique cultural-historical environment is protected, says Sanne Houby Nielsen, board member at Stiftelsen Nordiska museet.

Svindersvik is an exclusive precursor to wholesaler villas and contemporary summer houses, but not large enough to be called a castle or manor. The main building was designed by Carl Hårleman around 1740 for Claes and Johanna Grill. The rooms feature silk-upholstered furniture, Chinese rice paper wallpaper, tiled stoves and ceiling paintings. The Nordic Museum owns and preserves the cultural-historical environment and the 18th-century character since 1949.

The decision on the building heritage declaration means that changes and interventions in the area are now regulated by protective regulations established by the County Administrative Board. These regulations also mean that maintenance measures must be carried out with materials and methods that are adapted to the unique character of the site.

As a positive consequence of the building heritage declaration, the possibility of applying for grants for maintenance measures from the County Administrative Board is also opened up, which can make it easier for the Nordic Museum Foundation to preserve and care for the site’s historical heritage.

At Svindersvik, visitors can go on a guided tour on Saturdays and Sundays during the period 25 May to 8 September. The garden is open all year round and downstairs in the brewery there is a small cafe.
