The world’s most important congress for electric transport ends today in Seoul, South Korea. It was just revealed there that next year’s Electric Vehicle Symposium & Exhibition, EVS38, will be held in Gothenburg. The event is aimed at a diverse audience – experts of various kinds and anyone interested in the future of electric mobility. Over 10,000 visitors are expected to the Swedish Fair 15-18 June 2025.

In Seoul, a Swedish delegation has been on site throughout the week, presenting Gothenburg and describing what next year’s visitors can expect. Today the news was released internationally.

– Incredibly valuable to experience this big meeting on site, from our own collection stand together with the European organizer Avere. We have met a lot of key actors, and take insights home with us. I am surprised how many Korean experts tell me that they have been to Gothenburg, says Ulrike Firniss, project manager for EVS38 in Gothenburg.

With her, she had Anna Hylander, project manager from Gothenburg & Co, and Anne Piegsa, process manager for electromobility within the City of Gothenburg. Anne Piegsa has presented how Gothenburg tackles electrification, above all the innovation project Wireless charging which tests inductive charging of taxis in a real environment. Much appreciated, and fruitful going forward, the team testifies.

The transition is accelerating
The Electrical Vehicles Symposium, EVS, is the leading global event for the transition to electrification in all modes of transport. The symposium brings together manufacturers, authorities and researchers from all over the world and is expected to attract visitors and experts from 70 countries to Gothenburg in midsummer week 2025. It is the first time the congress takes place in Sweden.

– We are extremely proud to host EVS38, and the timing is perfect from many perspectives. We have a fantastically fine ecosystem in Gothenburg, very exciting development and major investments taking place – in most modes of transport. The question is whether any other European city can offer something similar, says Patrik Andersson, CEO of Business Region Gothenburg.

The transformation to electrified transport is accelerating in most modes of transport. Global sales of electric cars increased on every continent in 2023 and will increase another 21 percent in 2024, according to Bloomberg, which also expects sales of electric trucks and other commercial vehicles to double this year.

Private and public investment in new technology and new production units is large throughout Europe. In Sweden, the number of public charging points increased by 78 percent in 2023, and the most in Gothenburg.

A true European center for e-mobility
Through companies such as the Volvo companies, Polestar and Heart Aerospace, Gothenburg is a leading center in electrification. Chalmers and Rise are central players, as are the Port of Gothenburg and Stena Line. Few other regions in the world can display such a comprehensive and progressive mobility value chain, gathered in one place. Volvo Cars and Volvo Group are also each establishing their own battery factory in Western Sweden. A completely new battery industry is now emerging around them.

Real testbeds and initiatives such as Gothenburg Green City Zone, ElectriCity and Tranzero bring together innovative industry to create emission- and fossil-free transport solutions in collaboration with the city, academia and institutes. It has impressed the EU Commission. Last year, Gothenburg was appointed as a mentor city to lead Europe’s green transition. The city is also a pioneer in sustainability and has been named the most sustainable destination according to the Global Destination Sustainability Index seven years in a row.

EVS38 is organized by AVERE – European Association for Electromobility with the City of Gothenburg as host through Business Region Gothenburg and Gothenburg & Co.

During EVS, the city will organize a series of events in collaboration with industry and academia, with the aim of reaching out and engaging the public.
