The agreement, which goes by the designation DCA, Defense cooperation agreement, was signed in December 2023 by the defense ministers of the respective countries, but will need a decision in the Riksdag in June for it to come into effect.

The agreement gives the American squad the right to perform in Sweden, during exercises or in sharp situations. They may also store materiel and supplies in their assigned areas.

The proposal is expected to receive a majority in the Riksdag, but has been criticized by a large part of the peace movement in Sweden

– They say that Sweden will get security and stability, but we question whether that will be the case, says Ingela Mårtensson, who is active in women for peace nationally and is a former member of parliament for the People’s Party.

This week she visited Kiruna and met the local association and held a public meeting. Among other things, they are critical of the fact that American soldiers on the ground in Sweden will not obey Swedish law, but American law.
