Increases more slowly

By 2070, Sweden’s population is estimated to increase by 1.3 million inhabitants, the increase will be an average of 0.26 percent per year.

Today, Sweden has 10.5 million inhabitants, the calculation means that the number of inhabitants in 2070 will be 11.8 million.

“The population is expected to increase in the future at a slower rate than before. This is because fewer children are born, more people die, fewer immigrants and more emigrants than in previous years,” says Lena Lundkvistdemographer at Statistics Sweden, in the press release.

The number of elderly people is increasing

As people’s life expectancy increases and fewer and fewer children are born, the number of elderly people in Sweden will increase.

“This means that more people will die than are born in Sweden. Maybe not this year, but next year. It last happened for a few years around the turn of the millennium, but before that had not happened in Sweden since the beginning of the 19th century,” says Lena Lundkvist in the press release.

Changes in society can cause the conditions for Statistics Norway’s projection to change, which also changes the calculations about future population development.

Political decisions can, for example, have great significance for assumptions about future migration.

Dramatic decline in global fertility

By the end of this century, fertility rates in almost all countries will be too low to sustain population levels.
