Hagastaden is Solna’s and Stockholm’s joint urban development area. Solna’s part is called Norra Hagastaden, says Erik Nordenstam, planning architect at Samhällsbyggnadförvaltning. He is one of the plan architects working with Norra Hagastaden.

– A vision for Hagastaden is to develop the world’s foremost area for “Life Science”, a place for research, education, care and business, where 50,000 people will work. A total of 6,000 homes will be built, of which 3,000 in Solna, so that a total of 13,000 people can live in Hagastaden.

Erik Nordenstam describes Norra Hagastaden’s location as unique from a Solna perspective, because the area is connected to the rest of Hagastaden and Stockholm’s inner city. At the same time as it is next to Hagaparken and Brunnsviken. The buildings in the area will be a mixture of old and new.

– There are many old buildings, with architecture of the highest class, which are preserved in the area. Even the Hospital Park and other green areas that are preserved will provide a historical anchoring and are of course incredibly important for the quality of life in a dense city district.

Old buildings must be used in new ways. The focus is on creating more housing. It was, among other things, a prerequisite for the extension of the green subway line to Arenastaden from Odenplan and the new Hagastaden station that is currently being built.

– Most of the older houses that are saved are converted into housing. But also center purposes, such as commerce and services, offices, hotels or other businesses. Preschool, school, patient and family accommodation can be added in some of the older buildings that are saved in the area. Research, care and higher education are other possible purposes, although housing must be prioritized.

The older buildings in the area have histories that stretch far back in time. Eugeniahemmet was built at the end of the 19th century and was originally a hospital and school home for terminally ill children. It was the very first building in what later became the Solna hospital area.

– Eugeniahemmet was founded by Princess Eugenia, daughter of Oscar I. The plan for Eugeniahemmet’s main building is for it to become a patient and family home and function as a home-like accommodation for families with children who need to be in hospital. Other parts are intended to be rebuilt into a preschool and/or school. The historical connection to care and school for children means that the circle will be closed.

The Psychiatry building, from the 1940s, is also to be preserved. It was originally a small mental hospital and will be converted into housing.
