Last summer, Niklas Borg and his colleagues at the Gothenburg City Museum were tasked with identifying ancient remains in Burgårdsparken in central Gothenburg.

Then they found two graves that could be dated to the Viking Age by using the carbon-14 method on burnt bones.

When they now returned to the site to find out how big the graves were, they found at least five more.

– These Viking graves have gone and become a burial ground, says Niklas Borg.

The burial ground may even be somewhat older than the Viking Age, dating from the 6th century. It is estimated that there may be 10 to 20 additional graves that have not been excavated.

The place can now be attributed a greater importance than before.

– Knowing that this has been a place of dignity. Already during the Viking Age, people have been here, lived here, worked here, buried their dead here. It is new. It is absolutely a new part in the history of Gothenburg, says Niklas Borg.
