Aviation technology education is only available in a few places in Sweden – Arlandagymnasiet with us is one of them. In the aeronautics category, working participants compete, i.e. not high school students, but the competitors represent their former school. Today, Jakob Holm and Lukas Gullå both work at SAS.

Jakob Holm lives in Skepptuna and graduated from the aviation engineering course in 2020.

I have always liked flying and my first thought was to become a pilot but I like screwing and mecha so it became the aeronautical engineering course. In the future, I might want to focus on sheet metal work within aeronautics, he says.

The other person who has been appointed by Arlandagymnasiet to participate is Lukas Gullå. He lives in Knivsta and graduated from Arlanda Gymnasium the year after Jakob. He wanted to choose a high school line that was a little different.

Me and dad have tinkered with cars and I’ve always been technically interested so the line suited me. What will be a little nervous is that you don’t know how the competitions will be.

The competition consists of four stages. Sheet metal repair; electricity with a focus on troubleshooting, manufacturing and repairing cabling: daily supervision of a helicopter; and finally a part that involves changing components on a jet engine. Each stage may take approximately 1-2 hours.

Both Jakob and Lukas were nervous about the helicopter moment because they do not handle helicopters at work. The knowledge they have is from high school.

The aviation technology education at Arlandagymnasiet is a nationally recruiting upper secondary education. The students can train to become flight mechanics or helicopter mechanics. The largest part of the training takes place at Arlanda Airport, where the training has its own aircraft at its disposal.

The Professional Championship is Sweden’s largest professional competition and this year the competition celebrates 20 years.
