Canada’s Joe Veleno kicked an opponent with a ski boot.

The ugly measure was completely sawed off in SVT’s studio.

Canada took the lead against Switzerland on the power play.

But it was the prelude to the numerical superiority that caused reactions.

Switzerland’s Nino Niederreiter went out for roughing Canada’s Joe Veleno. Before that, Veleno had kicked Niederreiter with the ski boot rail.

– It’s lucky that it’s the shin guard and not at the back, then the heel tendon comes off. I think that is really ugly. Because the ski boot rail is so sharp, says Mikael Renberg.

“Cannot be defended”

Bert Robertsson, who was also in the studio, was not unkind in his criticism.

– It’s insane. It’s the biggest sin you can commit in ice hockey, to use your ski boots that way. It cannot be defended in any way.

According to Robertsson, Canada was “rewarded” for the kick, as the Swiss went out in the ensuing situation and Canada later made it 1–0.

– It doesn’t feel quite right, the referee made a mistake there, says Renberg.

– I suspect that there will be a suspension afterwards, he continues.

Turned the game around

The situation woke up Switzerland. Before the second period was over, they had turned after goals from Hischier and Simion.

In the third period, the lead was also extended when Andres Ambühl scored the 3–1 goal. Canada reduced but got no closer than that.

– Switzerland has a genuinely good hockey team, says Håkan Loob after the final whistle.

Switzerland won 3–2 and tops Group B. The team has won all five matches played this World Cup.
